Ubuntu is a Microsoft Product Now! Well at least according to Dell’s website. A 1.6GHz Atom CPU, 8GB of disk space armed with Microsoft’s latest masterpiece: Ubuntu! Update: Here is the original Dell website. The error is still up. Not fixed. Doesn’t matter, print screen already did the damage ;) Update 2: After 5 days from the original post, Dell finally fixed it. UbuntuOne - My Thoughts I finally received my invitation to Ubuntu One a few days ago. Since then I've been using it daily, and i have to admit that it's integration with Ubuntu is, as expected, second to none.
This isn't meant to be a critical blow-by-blow account of using Ubuntu One because you pop files in folder, it syncs them to your online storage. What else is there to say, really? Instead it's just a quick rundown of what Ubuntu One installs and how it works. Integration Ubuntu One places a folder in home/username called 'Ubuntu One'. Inside you have "My Files" and "Shared With Me". A shortcut to this folder is placed in your "Places" menu. Has Ubuntu let us down again Ubuntu's contribution to propagating Linux to the client platforms (general desktop/notebook) is invaluable. Its developers are known to codename major builds of the OS after animals. An upcoming version, 9.10 has been codenamed "Karmic Koala", after the cute and cuddly animal from south-east Australia. Going by Ubuntu's six-month development cycle, 9.10 should follow 9.04 "Jaunty Jackalope" slated for this April, and should be coming out by October. Take a deep breath, here come 5 short updates about Karmic Koala! Grub 2.0 Will be Default for New Installations Grub2 will replace Grub 1.5 in all new Karmic releases from current Alpha's on. What is Grub2? Basically a nicer version of Grub that you currently use - It has a slight visual refresh as well meaning that it is easier to fix and reinstall it should you need to. Banshee or Rhythmbox? It's still up-in-the-air as to which will be the default music player in Ubuntu. At UDS it seemed Rhythmbox was settled on, however Banshee advocates have piped up and the default media player for Karmic is, as of Alpha 2, still undecided... Vrooooooom... ....10 Second Boot Ubuntu have a 10 second boot goal for Karmic - and so far they're making excellent progress on it. As such they've decided NOT to use the 'Plymouth' boot-splash (looks fancier) as the computer won't be booting long enough to really notice it... EXT4 As Default Karmic will use the EXT4 filesystem as default meaning a significant sped boost for Ubuntu when writing/reading files and applications. No Major New Theme/Revamp Despite being planned for Januty but pushed back to Karmic Ubuntu's big interface revamp has been pushed back to 10.04. What is new in Firefox 3.5Just to add to the rest of the seemingly endless blog posts sitting around the web about Firefox's latest (and greatest) release, i too just want to inform you that version 3.5 should be hitting the servers today. Opera 10 Adapts Flawlessy into gnome Destop Opera 10 will be the next release of the popular browser. The current beta of Opera 10 comes in both QT3 and QT4 .debs for Ubuntu. Gnome users who have always been put off by Opera's QT interface need worry no-more as QT4 brings with it the ability to "use" the current GTK theme. Here is Opera 10 under Gnome using my GTK theme 'dust': Sexy! (And faster to use than Firefox i hate to say.) I grabbed mine from the Opera snapshot builds so for those keen to try it out find your suitable flavour of package over @ http://snapshot.opera.com/unix/snapshot-4478/ Tweaks/How To First off, make sure that you have chosen the 'Opera Standard' theme in the 'Appearance' menu. My motivation to do I.TIn many respects had i never discovered Linux i may possibly be a technology-agnostic person or at-least a Microsoft frick . Part of that is down to the sheer 'tech know-how' you learn as you use linux – though this is likely less intense than it once was, I'm sure. Secondly, Linux made me view things differently; it made me view my interactions with my computer differently too. No longer was it just using what was available – such as Windows Media Player for example – but more about what i wanted to use; what kind of software i wanted or needed or would like! Whilst i was always a bit of a geek in my XP monogamy back a year or so ago (seriously, that's all it's been!); my XP was skinned to look like OS X; i wasn't overly aware nor appreciative of how much work and choice there is out there for end users. An example being that i now user OpenOffice on ALL my OS's. How many people make do with word-pad or pay for iWorks? While some may look at it as a case of 'windows does all i need' – which is fair enough – i find that if it wasn't for linux instability at times (or it's every-so-often temper about some .confg file u accidentally nudged or shiz) then I'd likely answer the shout of 'Windows does everything i need' with a 'Yeah, but Linux does it better.' Windows 7 RC Free download Microsoft Windows 7 Release Candidate has been officially released for users around the world. This is just a pre-release software, but it is truly a candidate for the final version of Windows 7. This latest release will be available for download at least until July 2009, and the version will expire on June 2010. The Windows 7 RC consists of bug fixes and many changes from the Beta version, and they should work according to the Microsoft notes. In order to check if the changes and fixes work correctly, Microsoft has designed a program which automatically and anonymously sends information to MS engineers who will determine if they are working correctly.

USB 3.0 USB 2.0 (otherwise known as USB Hi-Speed) boosted the original 12Mbps data rate to 480Mmb/s over eight years ago, and now USB 3.0 (dubbed USB Superspeed) is set to multiply that bandwidth tenfold. If you are transferring a 27GB HD movie to your media player will only take 70 seconds with USB 3.0, while it would take 15 minutes or more with 2.0. Keep in mind that you’re only going to be able to take advantage of this speed if your portable storage device can write data that quickly. Solid state devices will benefit most from the speed boost, while magnetic hard disks will be limited by their RPM and corresponding read/write speeds. Bluetooth 3.0 - Transfer rate to 24Mbps Bluetooth High Speed Technology. The new Bluetooth versions shows markedly high rates of data transfer prior to its succeeding version, providing increased in data transfer at approximate rate of 24Mbps. We still have something to dig over this new technology, how about if its possible for the older version of Bluetooth devices be upgraded into 3.0? And if we analyze the power needed for this huge data transfers, this unhealthy power consumption can eats up portable devices life-time like netbooks, cellphones, PMPs and other battery-powered portables. These possible flaws are still on works with Atheros, Broadcom, and CSR are finding the compatible hardware solutions. We won’t still be able to see devices equipped with this standard up for another 9 to 12 months. So we can’t expect for incoming compatible Bluetooth devices like smartphones, camcorder or netbooks supporting this new spec until early 2010. |
